A 24-YEAR-OLD inmate at Khami Prison in Bulawayo has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to indecent assault involving a fellow inmate.
Devine Moyo from Sangulube area in Mangwe District, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Archie Wochiwunga yesterday and was convicted on his own plea of guilty.
Six months of his sentence were suspended for five years on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence during that period, leaving him to serve an effective six-month jail term.
His alleged accomplice, Romeo Clever Mpindi from Binga District, pleaded not guilty to the same charge and was remanded in custody to August 21 for trial.
The prosecutor, Ms Kufandikanwe, said the incident occurred on July 9 at Khami Prison during midday when most inmates were at the square parade.
“The two accused agreed to engage in anal sexual intercourse in the toilets. Mpindi was allegedly promised well-cooked meat by Moyo in return,” said the prosecutor.
The pair reportedly sneaked into the prison toilet block without knowing that two other inmates were monitoring their movements.
“Mpindi briefly exited the toilet to check if anyone had seen or followed them before returning to join Moyo,” said Ms Kufandikanwe.
The court heard that the two inmates who had been observing them from a distance then intervened and found them in the act. The matter was immediately reported to prison authorities, who alerted the police.
