THE Minister of Small to Medium Enterprises and Co-operative Development, Cde Sithembiso Nyoni, has encouraged Khayelihle Children’s Village in Bulawayo to intensify farming activities as it is key to curbing hunger and ensure constant supply of food at the institution.
Speaking at the KCV 24th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the home in Bulawayo yesterday, Cde Nyoni said the village has done great work and it should continue intensifying farming activities.
“I would like to thank the village for the great work that it has done. KCV started small, but it has grown very big through various projects that they are engaging in as a village,” he said.
Cde Nyoni also encouraged children to work hard, to be competitive and not to look down upon themselves.
She donated 50 kilogrammes of rice and maize and some clothes.
The village report revealed that KCV has 60 cows and are milking 18 cows which are producing an average of 302 litres a day.
The report also indicated that the home has constructed a hay shed to store hay bales and protect them from damage by the weather and also to control cattle from eating the grass anytime.
“We have 95 layers and we sell some of the eggs to the community and give some to the children. We also have 52 rabbits now from the 13 that we had last AGM and they are for children’s consumption.
“This year we were able to grow carrots, cabbages, lettuce and beetroot which we sold to the market and to the community. Orange trees produced more oranges this year and we will continue caring for trees, so that they produce fruits in their seasons,” read the report.
KCV has 54 children with 29 girls and 25 boys.
