PROCEEDS from South African maskandi sensation Khuzani’s debut show in Bulawayo will be channelled towards the construction of the proposed Matopo University, organisers have revealed.
Khuzani is set to make his Bulawayo debut on September 5, sharing the stage with Umfanomsotho, Nqindi, Zwelihle Jele and Mpilo Mbatha, among other performers.
Organisers said the concert is not only aimed at bringing top-class entertainment to the city, but will also contribute to a project they believe could expand access to higher education in Matabeleland South.
Mcilo Construction director Danisiwe Senda said the organisers had deliberately linked the entertainment event to the university project in a bid to create a lasting impact beyond the show.
“Through this show, we have a project being targeted and that is the proposed Matopo University. We now have some structures in place. We have started an administration block, which is currently at slab level. We have also started seven semi-detached houses for lecturers. That is what we are targeting for now.
“If we can get at least one truckload of cement, we will be very happy. The university will help the community a lot because it is going to be run by a church, the Brethren in Christ Church. It will be the first university run by the church in Matabeleland South. The goal is to give university opportunities to the kids from our region,” said Senda.
If established, Matopo University would add to the province’s higher education landscape, with Matabeleland South already home to institutions such as the Zimbabwe Open University’s regional presence and plans for further expansion of tertiary education in the province. The proposed institution is being spearheaded by the Brethren in Christ Church (BICC), with the development taking place in Mtshabezi, Gwanda District.
