flyweight, lightweight, super lightweight, bantamweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. The championships will be held in Antananarivo, Madagascar from September 27 to 30.
The tournament comes after the national association cancelled the Heroes Cup tournament that was supposed to be held last week after Finland and Equatorial Guinea, who had been invited to grace the event, failed to turn up.
And the challenge tournament will be a consolation for the kickboxers who had prepared for the tournament.
Zimbabwe were hoping to field their team against foreign professional kickboxers but things did not go according to their planning and have reverted to local events. Zika president Tony Kamangira said the event is a platform for the team to fine-tune their skills.
Currently there are six fighters in camp — Brighton Tangata, Absolom Chiturumane, Bernard Robin, Nicholas Kurimira, Ronald Deketeke and Tafadzwa Muropa.
“We have a local tournament on September 8 at our traditional venue. It’s part and parcel of our team preparations for the African championships.
“So far we have a provisional team of six fighters and we are still assessing some to see if they make the grade because last time some of the fighters’ attendance for training was not good.
“We want them to have as many fights as possible.
“They have to train hard because you may have the talent but if you don’t have fitness you can not go anywhere, so we are working on that and also the technical aspect.
“We are going to represent the nation so we must have people who are up to standard,” said Kamangira.
