consecutive time at the on-going 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 28-year-old Zimbabwean swimming sensation posted a good time of 2:08.32 when coming second behind American Missy Franklin in the second semi-final of the day.
Franklin came first in the second semi-final in 2:06.84, touching the wall first ahead of a battling Coventry who came second ahead Canada’s Sinead Russell (2:08.76) to book her place in tonight’s final.
Coventry’s time of 2:08.32 was the fourth-fastest qualifying time of the two semis and she must now be fancying her chances of breaking Team Zimbabwe’s medal drought at the London Games during tonight’s women’s 200m backstroke final.
The talented two-time Olympic Games women’s 200m backstroke champion could not hide her excitement after making it into tonight’s final.
“Yeah I’m very excited to get into the final and I’m going to try my best although some of the girls here are little bit faster than I am this time around,” Coventry said soon after putting up one of her best performances at these Games.
“I am happy with my performance. My goal was to make it to the final and I’ve done that. We’ll see how tomorrow (tonight) goes. (I’m) going to get some rest today (last night) and tomorrow morning, and come back for the final.
“Everything went according to the plan: I wanted to have the same sort of swim I had this morning, and I did.”
And speaking on her expectations for the final, Coventry said:” I don’t really have any expectations. I am just happy to be in the final. The girls who are ahead of me right now are really great, so it’s going to be a tight, exciting race tomorrow (tonight).
But I am not going to share any of my plan for the final.” Coventry qualified for last night’s semis with the third fastest time in the morning’s heats in which she posted a time of 2:08.14.
And now the stage is set for Coventry as she goes to re-write the history books when she competes in tonight’s final at the Aquatics Centre where she will be looking for a hat-trick of victories in the women’s 200m backstroke event at the Olympic Games.
She first won the Olympic Games 200m backstroke title at the 2004 Athens Games in Greece before she successfully defended her title at the next Games in Bejing,China, four years later.
