MATHONISA Beer Garden was a hive of activity last night when a total of 38 bouts were contested in the Bulawayo Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) organised boxing extravaganza involving 15 boxing clubs from different parts of the country.
Local boxers from Bulawayo West, Inyanda, Sikhulile High Schools, Nketa and Nkulumane Boxing Clubs as well as HQ One Brigade showed off their boxing prowess in the tournament that attracted the community of Mpopoma Township.
First in the ring was the bantamweight bout pitting Zibusiso Nyoni, a Team Zimbabwe boxer who will represent the country in the Africa Sports Council Union Region Five Under-20 Games in Angola in December, against Gilbert Dube of Bulawayo West Boxing Club. Nyoni emerged victorious in the first round through a technical knockout.
The second match of the day saw Lameck Ndlovu from Bulawayo’s Sikhulile High get the better of Arnold Chamunorwa from Victoria Falls Club in the Pin Weight category following a unanimous decision.
A unanimous decision in favour of Panashe Chidovori of the Kwekwe-based club Imbizo earned him a championship status after he defeated local based Brighton Musutu from Nketa Boxing Club. Nketa also suffered a huge blow when Lindokuhle Sibanda was knocked out by the Great Zimbabwe University student Proud Guruzani. Everson Musambidzi of Nkulumane also got the better of Bulawayo West’s Tinos Mutanho through a technical knockout.
Victoria Falls earned another win after Isaac Mathe convincingly defeated Harare based Takunda Bwanya of the Harare Boxing Club.
Gibson Moyo of Victoria Falls knocked out Welldone Hlabane of Sikhulile to earn the third win for the former’s team. Panashe Murengani lost to Inyanda’s Blessing Sibanda through points in the seventh match of the day.
