A viral skill move. A pro contract at one of England’s biggest clubs. A Zimbabwean name lighting up the future.
Meet 17-year-old David Chigwada, the rising star at West Ham United who might just be the next big thing for the Warriors.

Chigwada, born in the United Kingdom to Zimbabwean parents, has been retained by Premier League side West Ham for the 2025/26 season, a vote of confidence in his growing stature within the club’s academy.

The teenager signed his first professional contract in November 2024 after impressing in his debut season with the Hammers’ U-18 side. He joined West Ham from Manchester City last summer on a scholarship deal and wasted no time making an impression with his blistering pace, composure in front of goal, and natural flair.

His name first made waves when a highlight clip of his now signature move, dubbed the “Chigwada spin”, went viral during the Future Cup, a prestigious youth tournament hosted by Ajax.

The audacious skill lit up social media and showcased his fearless creativity on the ball.

Before his time in claret and blue, Chigwada began his football journey at Blackburn Rovers at just 12 years old.

From switching schools to relocating for better football opportunities, the teenager has overcome several challenges in pursuit of his dream.

Following the release of fellow Zimbabwean prospect Sean Tarima, now playing non-league football at FC Halifax Town, Chigwada remains the only Zimbabwean player currently in West Ham’s Academy setup.

His continued rise comes at a time when Zimbabwe is intensifying its efforts to identify and nurture diaspora talent.

Chigwada’s progress will be closely followed from Harare to Hackney, as fans dream of seeing him eventually don the Warriors jersey.

For now, the young forward’s future looks promising, and if his development continues at this pace, his next spin might just take him all the way to international football glory.
