KOMBI DRIVER BLOCKED FROM FLEEING ACCIDENT SCENE

A KOMBI driver, whose vehile struck and injured a passenger after the Toyota Hiace sideswiped a truck and hit another vehicle, tried to speed off from the scene in Harare’s CBD yesterday.

He sped along Robert Mugabe Road but was blocked by pedestrians when he turned into Mbuya Nehanda Street.

The kombi belongs to Solid Surface Investment.

The driver claimed that his kombi’s brakes failed resulting in the accident.

“My brakes failed, that is why I didn’t stop at the accident scene.

“I am trying to reach the vehicle owner to come and meet the victims,” the driver said.

He refused to identify himself.

Witnesses tried to convince the driver to find ways of taking the injured passenger to hospital in vain but he appeared bent on trying to reach settlement with the motorists whose vehicles he had damaged.

He didn’t want the parties to involve the police.

The injured passenger was eventually taken to hospital by a Good Samaritan.

The police later arrived at the scene and took statements from witnesses.
