A KOMBI driver, Blessmore Nyamasoka (29) was on Friday jailed for three years following an accident that resulted in serious injuries and one death.
He The sentencing took place on Friday, presided over by Harare magistrate Apollonia Marutya.
On January 7, Nyamasoka was driving a Toyota Hiace with 15 passengers along Nemakonde Way when he veered into oncoming traffic. He collided head-on with a Honda Fit driven by Respect Mawadzi, who had two passengers. The impact was severe, resulting in nine passengers sustaining serious head injuries and multiple fractures. They were subsequently taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment.
Tragically, one of the passengers, Rukodzi Kundishora, succumbed to his injuries on February 2.
The court found Nyamasoka negligent, noting that he drove at excessive speed, failed to maintain proper lookout, and acted unreasonably when the accident appeared imminent. His actions in driving against oncoming traffic were deemed reckless.
As part of his sentence, 12 months were suspended on the condition of good behavior, making two years of his sentence effective immediately.
Additionally, his driver’s license was canceled for classes 2 and 4, and he is prohibited from driving for two years following his release.
This case underscores the serious consequences of negligent driving and the importance of road safety.
