Kombi driver ordered to pay US$80 maintenance

Norest Nyangani has been ordered to pay US$80 per month for the maintenance of his two children and cover their full school fees.

Nyangani’s ex-partner, Nomponesi Sibanda, appeared before Harare Civil Court magistrate Ms Faina Makumbe, alleging that he had failed to provide financial support for their children.

“He does not pay school fees or send money for food, which he promised to do,” she said, adding that Nyangani had misled her about his employment status, noting that he had been seen driving at the kombi rank.

Initially, Sibanda demanded US$240 to cover school fees, clothing and rent.

“I am a vendor earning US$120 a month and cannot take care of the children alone.

“He earns US$100 per week, so he should be able to pay,” said Sibanda.

In response, Nyangani contested the request, claiming he could only afford US$80 because he is unemployed and has the financial burden of supporting two other children.

“I use my money for rentals, food and to support my elderly mother, who has no income,” he stated.

After hearing both sides, Magistrate Makumbe, ordered Nyangani to pay US$80 per month, starting July 31, and to directly pay the children’s school fees.
