JOHANNESBURG. — President Cyril Ramaphosa has remembered former Deputy President David Mabuza as a leader grounded in activism, hailing the 64-year-old for his contribution to a range of portfolios during his time in public office.
Mabuza, who served as deputy president from 2018 to 2023, died at a Sandton hospital yesterday.
He served as an MEC for education in Mpumalanga from 1994 to 1998 and as a regional chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) during the same period. He rose through the ANC ranks to become the party’s deputy president in 2017 and the country’s deputy president the following year.
After resigning as an MP in 2023, Mabuza kept a low profile.
