A commuter omnibus driver yesterday struck and killed a Harare Girls High School form four pupil and seriously injured 35-year-old Mr Odwell Mabanga at the corner of Park Lane and Leopold Takawira Street in the capital.

Mr Mabanga sustained spinal injuries and was rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident and said the yet-to-be-identified driver fled scene as by-standers battled to rescue the victims who were trapped under the vehicle.

The mother of the deceased pupil, identified as Jocelyn Gomba (17), was called to the scene where she wept uncontrollably while schoolmates and teachers stood in shock.

One witness said the driver was speeding and failed to control the vehicle which hit Mr Mubanga and two pupils, trapping them as it lay on its side.

Chief Supt Nyathi said police had since launched a manhunt for the driver.

“The driver was driving against the flow of traffic on a one way-road.

“We are also looking for the owner of the vehicle.

“We would like to appeal to kombi drivers to observe the laws of the road. Decisive action will be taken against errant drivers,” he said.
