NAIROBI. — The Kenya Revenue Authority has launched a new mobile phone service that enables taxpayers to make enquiries through their devices and thus ease congestion at its outlets. Taxpayers can now make inquiries through the Short Message Service and the USSD technology via their cellphones. The service is accessible through mobile network operators such as Airtel, Orange, YU and Safaricom.
Japan International Cooperation Agency provided the necessary server and software together with the technical support for testing and launching of the service through its Custom Administration Capacity-building project.
Among other services available through the mobile phones include customs services, domestic tax services and road transport services.
“The authority has plans to substantially automate its processes with a target to become fully information Communication and Technology networked with its corporate plan which ends in June 2015,” said KRA Commissioner-General, John Ngunjiri, during the ongoing 10th Annual Taxpayers’ Week. — CAJ News.
