Pearl was killed on duty in Karachi, Pakistani in 2002 and since then 6 700 performances have been held in different countries around the world.
“The Daniel Pearl Days remind us (that) whether we are in Karachi, Pakistan, or Harare, Zimbabwe, that all of us, no matter how different our religions or backgrounds, can come together and share a common humanity,” said United States ambassador to Zimbabwe, Charles Ray.
The performance by Kunonga also promoted international network of concerts that use the power of music to reaffirm people’s commitment to tolerance and humanity.
Kunonga is famous for his suave voice and acoustic guitar strumming skills that appeal to the people’s psyche and when he sings about love, peace, unity and tolerance, he does it straight from the heart.
Born on October 25, 1974, the award-winning Afro-jazz singer and songwriter has released a catalogue of albums that have put him on the local music map as one of the artistes to seriously contend with.
He first stormed the music scene with his debut album “Such Is Life: Ndanyengetedzwa” in 2004.
It carried hit songs like “Mayidarirei”, “Usacheme”, “Ndanyengetedzwa”, “Tigere” and “Peace” among others.
The former bodybuilder followed this up with the album “Uyo” in 2006 that also carried hits like “Mandirasa”, “Kana”, “Kure (The Prodigal Son”, “Mamurega” and the title track “Uyo”.
He also has other albums to his name.
So the decision to feature him at the concert at the weekend didn’t come as a surprise.
