KwaMaiguru takes Gweru by storm

WHEN in Gweru and you are hungry, then KwaMaiguru is the place to be.
The place is famed for its varied traditional dishes sold at affordable prices.
No wonder why the place has grown in leaps and bounds over a short period of time.
Employing only three people at its inception early last year, KwaMaiguru Food Outlet along Main Street in the City of Progress has become one of the big names in catering.

It is now a star attraction to both the upper and middle classes in the city.
KwaMaiguru’s extraordinary journey to the top reads like a novel.

The place, now a designated tourist facility with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, continues to break new grounds. It now has an outside catering division.

KwaMaiguru has the capacity to offer mouth-watering dishes to about 160 people at any given time at its locality and it now employs 22 people.

When you consider the employees’ families and dependants, the food outlet is taking care of more than 100 people.
Veracious Mhanga Mindisi, the founder and Director of KwaMaiguru, said although the place specialises in traditional dishes, it also has a fully-fledged grill section that specialises in Western dishes.

On offer on the traditional side is sadza rezviyo, zvinyenza zvembudzi, road runner, madora, muriwo une dovi, mukaka wakakora, nyama yembudzi and maguru nematumbu.

“I never thought this would be big business when I started running this place, KwaMaiguru. I just wanted to make fast cash. I realised traditional dishes would appeal to the people so I started preparing them.

“We later realised that although our dishes were popular with the older generation, they did not appeal to youths who at times accompanied their parents to this place. With the indulgence of our customers we introduced the grill section,” said Mindisi.

The innovative Mindisi has now introduced outside catering that specialises in corporate catering, boardroom luncheons, weddings, cocktails, church events, school functions, among others.

Although she has a vibrant kitchen running which is the envy of many customers, Mindisi still dreams big.
“I’m striving to host bigger functions and in the next year I want to do air catering. That is my dream,” she said.

The recent recognition by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority is the latest indication that KwaMaiguru has become a brand which can cater for the international market.
