The Midlands Special High Court Circuit has sentenced two men from Kwekwe to 25 years in prison for murder.
Obey Mtombeni (29) and Prosper Hone (24) were convicted for assaulting and stabbing Blessing Muza, who succumbed to the injuries and died upon arrival at the hospital.
According to a statement by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) on December 3, 2022, the now-deceased Muza and his brothers were at the Mbizo Inn club.
“He (Muza) went outside to relieve himself and saw the accused persons assaulting Tinotenda Nyama. He tried to intervene, and the accused persons assaulted him with clenched fists all over his body before stabbing him on the left side of the chest. He managed to escape and ran back to his brothers, who rushed him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” read the statement.
The duo (Mthombeni and Hone) was convicted and sentenced by the High Court sitting in Gweru.
“This sentencing is part of the court’s efforts to clear its backlog of cases, having recently completed 60 cases by the end of last month. The Midlands High Court Circuit has been handling various cases, including murder trials, with significant progress reported in Gweru and Gokwe. This special circuit court was established to address a backlog of over 500 cases dating back to 2019.”
