Kwekwe greens Mnangagwa St

Kwekwe City Council is stepping up efforts to green the Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Street (formerly Main Street), which cuts across the city.

The street had been neglected for a long time but is now being attended to on the back of the national clean-up drive spearheaded by President Mnangagwa.

Kwekwe is nurturing a breath-taking greenery along the Emmerson Dambudzo Manangagwa Street, a development that has been welcomed by residents and visitors.

City Engineer John Mhike said Kwekwe has upped its smart city concept and was taking advantage of the national clean-up campaign to beatify the city.

“When the President introduced the clean-up campaign, we had already adopted the smart city concept and now that residents are beginning to understand what it means to keep their city clean. It is becoming even easier for us to beatify our city,” he said.

Eng Mhike said they were planting shrubs, setting rockeries and laying the lawn along Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Street, and were planning to move to other streets soon.

“We are giving our city a green look and improve its ambience. At the moment we are targeting places with high traffic volumes but our aim is to make sure that we have a beautiful city in the end,” he said.

Under the smart city concept, Kwekwe is working towards becoming a modern city.

It has begun building high rise buildings.

Eng Mhike said the city was expanding eastwards and for all construction work underway, they are approving three-storey buildings as they adopt the modern city concept.

Some residents called on the council to put more street litter bins.

Another resident, Mr Rabson Hove said: “What the council is doing to try and turn the city green is commendable. The city has always been known to be clean so council should keep raising the bar like what we are witnessing along Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Street.”
