Kwekwe group scoops Road to Fame prize

Guruve Marimba and Attacking Super Sounds finished on second and third position respectively.

In an interview Press Liason of the group Johannes Zvigo said they were ecstatic on winning first prize and it had boasted their morale as an up-and-coming group.

“First and foremost we would like to thank the Lord Almighty for everything, we are overwhelmed, this prize is beyond us, we owe it to the Lord,” said Zvigo.

He said clinching the first prize was a major break through for them.

“This is our first time taking part in the competition after winning at provincial level.

“This group was founded last year and winning this competition is a major breakthrough for us,” said Zvigo.

He said his group would use the prize money to acquire more musical equipment for the band to expand.

The eight member group is a youth dominated group aged between 21 and 30 and has so far composed five tracks.

Last year the coveted title went to Harare based Munandi Express taking over from 2010 winners Club Shanga.

Hundreds of people from all corners of the capital thronged the exhibition area to be part of the annual competition which has become a major event on the country’s entertainment calendar.

The Chibuku Road to Fame is an annual talent search programme held as partnership between the National Arts Council and Delta Beverages.

This year’s finals coincided with Chibuku’s 50th anniversary celebrations which saw a star studded line up of some of Zimbabwe’s crème de la crème belting it out the night away.

First on the line up was promising sungura artiste Romeo Gasa, a product of the talent search competition put up a spirited perfomance kick starting the show in style.

Peter Moyo and Tryson Chimbetu were not to be outdone as they had the whole stadium singing and dancing along.

Superstar and patron of the competition Oliver Mtukudzi and sungura maestro Macheso proved they are in a league of their own as they mesmerised the growing crowds.

Tuku’s par excellence performance was iced with fireworks for the 50th anniversary of the Chibuku brand.
Macheso had the whole stadium chanting the Zora butter slogan with a majority of Dynamos fans celebrating Highlanders defeat to Monomotapa on the same day.

Dancehall supremo Winky Dee closed the show in the early hours of Sunday and he was at his best.
