KWEKWE High School will next Wednesday play host to the National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) Under-17 boys’ soccer finals.
Twelve schools from the country’s 10 provinces will battle it out in the tournament which has for the past decade been known as the M & H Under-17s’ tournament.
Defending champions Churchill and Prince Edward will represent the Harare Metropolitan Province with Midlands Province also having two schools – Amaveni and Kwekwe High School.
The other participants are Gifford (Bulawayo), Masvingo’s Gutu High School, Mavhuradonha of Mashonaland Central, Chemhanza’s Mashonaland East, Cornway (Mashonaland West), Manicaland’s Gaza, Mzingwane (Matabeleland South) and Mavela from Matabeleland North.
This year’s edition is likely to run without a sponsor as the traditional benefactors are yet to confirm their involvement in the competition.
Johnson Madhuku, the Nash president said they are ready to go ahead with the finals even without a sponsor as they have held tournaments for other disciplines without a benefactor.
“Our sponsor for more than a decade, M&H, hasn’t confirmed this year’s sponsorship by now but this age-group is critical to Nash because that’s where we select our team for the COSSASA (regional) 17 years and under tournament. So, with or without a sponsor, it’s mandatory that Nash sponsors this tournament as we always do with all our sporting disciplines without sponsors for example the 20 years and under netball, 20 years and under boys and girls volleyball, basketball for the 16 years and under as well as the 20 years and under.
“It is Nash’s core business to ensure that we provide high quality education to all our students, this is, academic, sports, arts and cultural. We will live to this call,” said Madhuku.
He is hopeful that they will manage to raise a $10 000 sponsorship package for the boys’ Nash Under-17 soccer competition.
