Kwekwe to benefit from free eye ops

Celebration Health said in a statement yesterday that those with cataract problems should visit Kwekwe General Hospital, Zhombe Mission, Sherwood Clinic and Silobela District Hospital for screening. At Kwekwe General Hospital, screening will be done until Friday, while at Zhombe Mission Hospital eligible patients will be screened tomorrow.
On Friday, doctors will be screening patients at Sherwood Clinic and for Silobela district, screening will take place on Thursday next week. The operations will take place at Kwekwe General Hospital from August 1-3.
“Please, bring relevant medical records and patients are also requested to be accompanied by a family member in case they need any assistance,” said Celebration Health.
Zimbabwe has about 100 000 people suffering from cataract problems and an annual backlog of about 60 000 in need of the surgery.
Experts say that the country needs to conduct about 15 000 cataract operations per year to clear the backlog and attribute the huge backlog to obsolete equipment and lack of staff.
Some cataract patients do not seek treatment because of the high costs involved.
It costs between US$800 and US$1 500 to have a cataract operation which is way beyond the reach of many.
