A 22-year-old woman from Kwekwe allegedly lost her week-old baby to a stranger who sent her to buy freezits and disappeared with the newborn.
Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident which occurred on Wednesday around 9 am at Kwekwe District Hospital.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a kidnapping case where a mother lost her seven days old daughter to an unknown female adult who purported to assist her to carry the baby from Kwekwe District Hospital going home. The incident occurred on December 4 at about 9 am,” he said.
Inspector Mahoko said the mother, Rumbidzai Gunhu of Mbizo, Kwekwe, had gone to Kwekwe District Hospital with her daughter for a post-natal visit.
He said after the services, she left the hospital while holding the baby. Gunhu then met an unknown female adult who offered to assist her in carrying the baby.
“On the way, the woman gave Gunhu ZiG20 and asked her to go and buy freezits while she remained holding the baby. Gunhu returned after a few minutes and could not locate the woman and the baby,” said Inspector Mahoko.
He said the Gunhu searched for the two all over the place but could not locate them.
She then made a police report.
“We are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the woman and recovery of the baby to alert the police,” said Inspector Mahoko.
