THE Lady Chevrons are back in the country after securing their ticket to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier by winning the regional tournament held in Botswana.

Zimbabwe Women’s Cricket team won the Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier, beating Namibia by 13 runs in the final.

They finished the tournament unbeaten, winning all their seven games in the tournament.

The Sports and Recreation Commission was among those that congratulated the ladies for their impressive showing in Botswana.

“Congratulations to the ‘Lady Chevrons’, Zimbabwe’s women’s cricket team for being crowned the ICC Women’s T20 Africa Champions. They have qualified for the T20 global World Cup qualifier,” the SRC wrote.

Lady Chevrons’ Mary Anne Musonda attributed the team’s success to team work.

“Nothing beats teamwork! Thank you for the support, you were all a crucial part of us throughout the tournament. Your support kept us going. This one’s for you,” she said.

The Lady Chevrons who have now qualified for the global qualifier on the African ticket will now square off with the champions from four other regional qualifiers at the Global qualifier. The top two teams will then proceed to the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup set for South Africa.

Before that, they will quickly turn their attention to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier which will run from November 21 to December 5 in Harare.

The qualifiers were originally meant to be hosted by Sri Lanka in July 2020, but the Covid-19 pandemic forced a postponement of the event as well as the main World Cup event in New Zealand.

The 10-team tournament, whose schedule will be announced in due course, decides three qualifiers for the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup to be held in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3, joining five teams which have already qualified through the ICC Women’s Championship, Australia, England, India, South Africa and New Zealand.
