Lady Chevrons’ huge setback

A dominant bowling performance was squandered by a fragile batting display as Zimbabwe Women fell to a 22-run loss against the Netherlands in a T20 World Cup qualifier in Kirtipur yesterday.

Choosing to field first, Zimbabwe were led by a brilliant spell from Christabel Chatonzwa, who recorded figures of 5/22 to dismantle the Dutch innings.

Supported by Lindokuhle Mabhera and Audrey Mazvishaya, the attack restricted the Netherlands to 122 all out in 19 overs, with Phebe Molkenboer (27) and Sterre Kalis (26) making the only notable contributions.

But Zimbabwe stumbled to 25-4 within seven overs, with captain Chipo Mugeri Tiripano dismissed for four.

Nyasha Gwanzura injected brief momentum with a rapid 26 from 14 balls, while all-rounder Chatonzwa remained not out on 15.

The middle and lower order could not recover, however, stifled by a tight Dutch bowling attack.

Isabel van der Woning was particularly economical for the Netherlands, conceding just four runs from her two overs and taking two wickets to secure a vital win for her side in the tournament.

Zimbabwe could only manage to put 100 on the board in their 20 overs.

Zimbabwe are drawn in Group B, alongside the Netherlands, Thailand, Scotland, and Nepal. Before the match, the Lady Chevrons head coach raised his concern about the condition of the pitch that favours spin.

“We need to think on our feet. Batting-wise, we are focusing on getting onto the front foot, using our feet aggressively against spin, and employing the sweep shot effectively,” said Chaguta prior to the game.

Now, Zimbabwe focuses on their next game against Thailand on Tuesday, hoping to secure a win to fancy their chances of progressing to the next round.
