ZIMBABWE Cricket (ZC) Women have named a 15-member squad that is set to take part in a white ball series against Thailand starting on Wednesday.
The team will leave Harare without the skipper, Mary-Anne Musonda whom they will link up with in Thailand. Musonda is travelling to Thailand from Hong Kong where she was taking part in the second edition of the FairBreak Invitational T20 tournament.
Named in the Lady Chevrons squad are seasoned campaigners who are no strangers to international cricket having represented Zimbabwe in the biggest stage of the game. This will be their first international assignment of the year and they are set to play four Twenty20 International matches and three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and all matches will be played at Terdthai Cricket Ground in Bangkok.
Zimbabwe will also be using the series as part of their preparations for the regional and global qualifiers which are scheduled to take part later in the year. Despite not playing much international cricket, the players have been participating in local franchise games which has kept them in the right shape.
Gary Brent and his side will be looking at making the most of the tour after missing out on qualifying for the T20 World Cup due to lack of international exposure after falling short and finishing third in the eight-team tournament that took place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Having the opportunity to play international cricket before going to global events will be vital to the performance of the team.
After the tour, two domestic finals are set to take place where Eagles Women will feature in both. The Harare-based side will be up against Mega Market Mountaineers in the Women’s T20 Cup final and will also face Rhinos in the Fifty50 Challenge title decider.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Emerging team that was in India for a 28-day tour flew back to Zimbabwe on Thursday after completing their matches. The young squad, which was under the stewardship of former Chevrons captain Elton Chigumbura played four four-day matches, losing three and winning one against Omtex ICWC Cricket Institute.
Their trip to the Asian nation was part of ZC’s development plan.
