THE Zimbabwe senior women’s cricket team is scheduled to leave for Thailand on Saturday looking to widen the gap between them and the Asian side when they play for ranking points in the limited overs bilateral series.
Thailand’s game has progressed over the years and they are not pushovers anymore, a point Lady Chevrons’ gaffer, Gary Brent is cognisant of.
The series comprise three One Day Internationals and four T20Is in Bangkok.
“It’s a very important engagement for us, certainly in terms of rankings.
“We are number 11 and they are number 12 so hopefully if we can do well we can further that gap,” said Brent.
“Obviously they are hoping to overtake us so it’s quite important in a whole big scheme of things.”
The women cricketers quietly went about their business in the Midlands city of Kwekwe at a time all focus was on the Chevrons.
At half-a-dozen games in either format, 50 overs and T20 gave the girls some vital game time and it is now time to put their domestic show onto an international test when they square off against Thailand.
“The ladies provincial tournament has been excellent for us,” said Brent.
“There has been six games in the last six weeks in Kwekwe; six T20, six one day games so it’s been fantastic preparation.
“There are some great talent coming up and the overall, the standard of the girls has really (really) improved, which is really good to see.
“Thailand is certainly a very (very) strong side, the game has evolved and we were lucky enough to beat them in all three games in the UAE going up to the Qualifiers.
“I hope we can keep that up but I know that they are a strong side especially at home so it’s gonna be a really tough assignment, we will see how that goes.”
