THE Hwange golfing community is in mourning after one of the most promising and up-and-coming lady golfers in the area, Selina Njamba passed on early this week.
She died in Harare and was laid to rest at the Zesa (Hwange) cemetery in an emotional and moving event yesterday afternoon. She was 44.
According to her husband Mubita Njamba, Selina succumbed to celebral malaria upon return from a shopping trip in Mozambique.
“We’re still in deep shock because she died after a very short illness in Harare after she succumbed to malaria just after returning from a shopping trip in the region. She had risen to be one of the top lady golfers in Hwange and the southern region as a whole after I introduced her to the greens in 2009.
“She was a fast learner and by 2010 she had started to collect some major awards at golf tournaments and the loss will be for a lifetime as I have lost a wife, soul mate, friend and a golf partner,” said an emotional Njamba at the burial.
Hwange Golf Club lady captain Matron Mguni also poured her heart out at the burial ceremony over the loss of the avid golfer.
“Selina was destined for the skies in this sport as we all enjoyed playing with her. She inspired the ladies with her achievements. It’s difficult to describe the pain we have now and we hope in future we can organise a tournament in her memory,” said a teary Mguni.
Among other accolades, Selina was the winner in the ladies category during the 2011 Livingstone Open, 2012 Traditional Chiefs golf tournament overall winner and a runner up to renowned Bulawayo-based golfer Acy Zerf during the 2013 editions of the Hwange Open and Elephant Hills Open tournaments.
In the 2014 Hwange Closed tournament Selina, who was now handicap 18, was awarded for the Longest Drive under the ladies category and was set to give other prominent lady golfers who include Zerf, Mguni, Shelly Gwanonga, Virginia Mabena, Terry Tshamala, Prisca Chimukoko, Patience Utete, Colleen Rakabopa and Viola Musengi a good run for their money in the upcoming Kamandama Golf tournament set for June 5.
Selina is survived by her husband and two sons Mensen and Alister.
