THE Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union president Margaret Vera heaped praises on the women’s team that finished on position five at the 2022 All-Africa Challenge Trophy at the Dar Es Salaam Gymkhana Golf Club in Tanzania on Thursday.
Zimbabwe was represented by the trio of Batsirai Tilowakuti, Yollander Mubaiwa and Kudzai Mandava who were welcomed by the Zimbabwean Ambassador to Tanzania, Anslem Nhamo Sanyatwe, at the biennial continental competition.
Vera, who accompanied the team to Tanzania, said it was great that they finished on a respectable fifth place out of 20 countries that took to the field.
“Well done to the Zimbabwe women’s golf team for finishing a respectable fifth out of 20 participating nations at the 2022 All-Africa Challenge Trophy,” she said.
Tilowakuti had put the nation in a good standing after the opening round when she opened with a level-par-72 and third on the overall standings.
The seasoned campaigner followed up her solid 72 on the opening day with a 83 as Royal Harare’s youngster Mandava bounced back from a difficult opening day to card the best round by a Zimbabwean player during the second round.
Mandava (17), who was the youngest member of the Zimbabwean team, carded a 78 as Zimbabwe moved to fifth place.
Powerhouse South Africa won the tournament on 444 points as Morocco was second on 449 points with the hosts Tanzania completing the top three on 455 points.
Kenya and Zimbabwe were fourth and fifth on 458 and 476 points respectively.
South Africa’s Gauteng North golfer Bronwyn Doeg, who was making her debut appearance at the tournament, won the individual award.
