The Lady Sables put up a valiant fight against Tunisia in a nail-biting encounter that went down to the wire yesterday.
Despite a strong performance from the Zimbabwean side, Tunisia managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with a last-gasp try, sealing the win 27-24.
The match got off to a rocky start for the Lady Sables, with them on the back foot but they held on and calmed the Tunisian storm.
However, the team showed great resilience and determination, holding Tunisia scoreless for the first 10-15 minutes of the game. Tunisia eventually broke through with a flurry of tries, taking a significant lead into the halftime break.
The second half saw the Lady Sables come out strong, with Rufaro scoring a try in the corner in the 55th minute. Despite some promising build-ups, including one that was unfortunately snuffed out by a knock-on, the team managed to gain momentum.
Nokutenda Shoriwa made a stunning 60-meter run to the try line, setting up a try that was converted by Kudzai Chirinda.
As the game neared its climax, the Lady Sables’ pace began to tell, with Tunisia struggling to keep up. In a dramatic turn of events, the Lady Sables managed to pull ahead with a try from their talisman, taking the score to 24-22.
However, Tunisia refused to give up, and a counter-attacking play earned them a try at the death, as Tunisia took the lead and sealed the win with a conversion, leaving the Lady Sables on the wrong end of a 27-24 scoreline.
Despite the loss, the Lady Sables can take heart from their performance, particularly in the second half. The team showed great character and determination, and their pace and skill were evident throughout the game.
With some fine-tuning and adjustments, the Lady Sables will look to bounce back strong in their next match against Uganda − ZRU.
