Lafarge launches road safety campaign

The safety drill is running under the theme “Safe choice smart move” and has been on since June across all Lafarge cement companies around the globe.
In an interview, Lafarge spokesperson Mrs Nyaradzo Makombe-Hazangwi said they have engaged the Mabvuku community in the “Wear a Vest” campaign to reduce the number of accidents that usually occur along the Arcturus Road.
“As Lafarge Zimbabwe we are currently giving out vests to cyclists who use Arcturus Road so as to increase their visibility in the road thus reducing the number of accidents that normally occur in that road,” she said.
Some of the beneficiaries of the vests cycle everyday from home to their workplaces that are as far as Borrowdale.
This makes them prone to accidents, as they are not visible during the night.
Mrs Makombe-Hazangwi added that they were not only giving out the vests but were also engaging them in small safety talk.
“We are not only giving out the vests, we are also encouraging them that while they are cycling they should not wear headphones and cycle side by side talking but to cycle in a single file.
“This is not meant for the cyclists only but the drivers as well. We encourage them not to be selfish but to share the road with the cyclists,” she said.
So far they have handed out over 500 vests to cyclists who feel that they have been protected and now they are visible to motorists.
She also said they are taking it to the next level by engaging their stakeholders outside the plant to embrace the campaign.
Established in 1956 as Circle Cement, the company has the capacity to produce 450 000 tonnes of cement per year. Currently, the plant is closed for repairs.
