THE Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) has confirmed that Lake Chivero, a key water source for Harare, reached full capacity yesterday along with other major dams countrywide following continuous rains that have been pounding the country for the past two weeks.

The national dam level average is now at 84.7 percent.

Zinwa yesterday said Lake Chivero was spilling, but this has not brought relief to Harare residents, who are still experiencing erratic water supplies owing to council’s inefficiencies.

Zinwa corporate communications manager Marjorie Munyonga said:

“We can confirm the spilling of Lake Chivero; the dam started spilling today (yesterday) as a result of continuous inflows into the lake from the current rains.

“Most of the country’s major dams continue to on the rise as the country receives more and more rainfall. The intensified rainfall activity over the past two weeks has seen a number of the dams across the country filling up and spilling.

“The national dam level average has risen to 84.7 percent. As of today, Lake Chivero is 108 percent full.”

Despite the recent rains, the Meteorological Services Department has warned of a dry spell in the coming days.

“The moderate Tropical Storm Cheneso is currently in the Mozambique channel.

“If it moves according to the currently projected trajectory, it should start diverting moisture away from Zimbabwe.

“This will result in reduced rainfall activity in the southern districts of the country from today into the weekend.

“However, the trajectory is subject to change,” the Met department said.

The department advised farmers to do weed management, apply fertilisers and pesticides, among other activities, as the country entered the second phase of the 2022–2023 farming period.
