Princess Ngwenya was the highest scorer for Lakers as she netted several baskets to emerge with 24 points while MSU’s Bernadette Toronguta topped for MSU with 13.
Unicorns (m) in the meantime continued with their good form as they beat fifth placed Kings 85-67 to maintain their top spot on the log standings.
In arguably the best match of the weekend, Kings led in the first quarter 20-15 but the visitors from Midlands overturned their deficit ending the second quarter 28-14 leaders and 43-34 overall.
Unicorns were to continue their rout as they blasted Kings 29-9 in the third quarter and the last quarter was an epic battle which was narrowly won by Kings 24-22 but it was a case of too little too late.
Unicorns’ Simba Chiromo was the match’s highest scorer with 28 points while the evergreen duo of Tatenda Tswatswa and Walter Mabhena got 26 and 23 respectively. Kevin
Mavengere got 16 for Kings. Player/coach Walter Mabhena hailed the mental strength his team showed.
“We came from five points down in the first quarter to beat a determined Kings team and this showed our mental strength as a team and we managed to win and stay at the top of the league,” he said.
MSU tasted victory after they mauled ZB Titans 75-47 and Goodluck Chiparawushe was the highest scorer for MSU as he bagged 20 points while the Titans star Stanley Gumbo had a points tally of 25.
Saturday was capped by the grudge match between Giants (m) and MSU after the latter were beaten narrowly in a tough game that had to be settled after extra-time in their previous encounter but this time, third placed Giants had a master plan for the university as they beat them 69-58.
The match was tough as their last encounter but this time the experience of Giants made the difference.
Giants’ Kuda Makumbe was the highest scorer as he got 16 points while the usual suspects Muchengeti Hamandishe and Emmanuel Mukandi scored 14 and 10 points respectively with Professor Bonono getting 14 for MSU.
Meanwhile, in matches played on Friday, Highlanders registered a walkover over Stars who failed to pitch up while ALCC thrashed struggling ZB Titans 72-47.
Kings capped Friday’s matches with a drubbing of struggling Sixers 74-34.
