Olia Alfazema had come first in the championship division but was later adjudged to have scored a stroke higher, scoring eight instead of seven and that meant her two days gross total was no longer 169, giving second-placed Yolanda Mubaiwa, who grossed 170, the championship division.
“How could Loice (Chingono) glaringly lie and say she did see what happened, she was desperate for the win and I knew it. She is always against me,” claimed a crying Alfazema, who was being consoled by other ladies, including Hwange’s Shelly Gwanonga.
The situation really turned ugly when some caddies started gathering around but Alfazema was never perturbed as she kept on castigating Chingono.
Chingono had a gross total of 178 and came third in the division.
The division had only six players that also included Harry Allen Golf Club player Lorraine Huna, who however had a terrible weekend, grossing 203.
“When I came for the tournament I was in the A Division but was shocked to learn that I will play in the championship division and naturally I was still a bit shaky. The course also was rather too dry,” said Huna.
Most of the players also blamed the high scores on the scorching heat that hit Hwange during the weekend with temperatures estimated to be well over 38 degrees celsius. In the A division, Melody Chiwaya came first with her two days gross of 177 while Loveness Chandavenga came second with a gross of 181. Midlands golfer Stella Feldman was third at 182 gross total.
The heat seemed to have had a huge impact on the ladies, especially during the first day as most of them had improved on the second day gross totals, some even improving by a huge 11 strokes, like Bulawayo’s Acy Zerf who grossed 95 on the first day before ending her tournament with a score of 84 yesterday.
In the C division, they were using a stableford format and it was a Hwange affair, as Viola Musengi grossed 67 for a five over par win, followed by Matron Mguni who grossed 60 for a 12 over par.
Bridget Monochio was third with a gross of 57.
