Kwekwe City Council has set aside a 6 000 square metres piece of land for the construction of a multi-purpose vending stall.
In an interview, Kwekwe City director of works Engineer John Mhike said the vast piece of land will accommodate vendors, a farmers’ market and other small scale business people.
“A vast piece of land has been reserved for the construction of multi-purpose vending stall. The land will see the construction of vending stalls that will accommodate vendors, farmers market, small scale business people and any other structure,” he said.
“We have identified the vast piece of land just adjacent to the long distance bus terminus where we intend to construct a state of the art vending stall to accommodate our vendors.”
Eng Mhike said the construction will begin soon after the completion of the planning and feasibility studies currently underway on site.
“We are currently conducting feasibility and planning at the site. Soon after we will then draw a budget that will see the commencement of construction work,” he said.
Eng Mhike said council was also working on existing vendings stalls for them to accommodate 3000 vendors.
“We are in the process of making extensions to our existing vending stalls inside the bus terminus and also the market stall as well as the farmers market so that most of our people can have a place to conduct their business from,” he said.
He said the city was on an expansion drive in response to the ever increasing population.
“The city is ever growing so we also have to come up with plans to accommodate everyone and that is one way. People are increasing by the day,” he said.
It is estimated that Kwekwe has 3000 vendors.
