Land Inheritance Turns Deadly: Man Stabbed in Tsholotsho

Sunday News Reporter

In a shocking turn of events, Bruce Meluleki Ngwenya was brutally stabbed following a dispute over a piece of land he inherited from his late mother, Olitha Nyoni. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of landowners who choose to remain apolitical in a politically charged environment.

According to a relative who wished to remain anonymous, Nyoni obtained the land during the land reform program, which aimed to redistribute land to previously marginalized individuals. Upon her passing, Ngwenya inherited both the land and the title deeds, becoming the rightful owner.

However, Ngwenya, known for his disinterest in politics, staunchly resisted the pressure from Zanu-PF members in Tsholotsho, who teamed up with some of his relatives against him inheriting the piece of land, to actively participate in the party’s affairs. This stance made him a target of attacks, with individuals claiming that since the land was acquired through Zanu-PF, he should also support and campaign for the party.

The relative, who spoke candidly about the situation, revealed that Ngwenya’s refusal to engage in politics had resulted in the tragic stabbing incident. The relative expressed deep concern for Ngwenya’s safety, emphasizing that he now feels unsafe on the land he genuinely inherited from his mother.

“Meluleki is one person who vowed never to be involved in politics but his only interest was farming in the piece of land he inherited from his mother, his being targeted is honestly unfair. It is also unfortunate that some of our relatives who were against him inheriting the land have also joined forces with these people, mainly war veterans,  to attack him, ” said the relative.

The incident has sparked outrage among community members, who are demanding swift justice for Ngwenya and an end to the political pressure faced by landowners. Local authorities have been urged to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Ngwenya’s case highlights the challenges faced by individuals who choose to remain neutral in politically charged environments. It serves as a reminder of the need for tolerance and respect for individuals’ personal choices, especially when it comes to matters of land ownership and inheritance.

As the investigation unfolds, Ngwenya’s family and members of the community are rallying together to support him and ensure his safety. The incident has ignited a broader conversation about the importance of protecting individuals’ rights to their inherited properties, regardless of their political affiliations.

The authorities have been called upon to take immediate action to address the growing concerns of safety and political coercion in the community. The hope is that justice will be served, and steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

Ngwenya’s story serves as a stark reminder of the delicate balance between land ownership, politics, and personal choice. It is a somber reflection of the challenges faced by individuals who dare to resist political pressure, even on land they have genuinely inherited from loved ones.

Contacted for comment, local Zanu-PF officials denied any involvement in the incident and expressed their condolences to Ngwenya and his family. They emphasized their commitment to promoting peace and unity in the community, urging everyone to work together to find a resolution.

As Ngwenya recovers from the harrowing attack, the community watches with bated breath, hoping that justice will prevail and that his story will serve as a catalyst for change in Tsholotsho.
