ZIFA Southern Region patron and businessman Raj Modi is set to bankroll an eight-team tournament named after the late Vice-President John Landa Nkomo. The tournament, which will involve teams from Zifa Southern region, will be officially launched next month. Impeccable sources within the league revealed the eight teams will battle it out in the inauguralJohn Landa Nkomo Tournament set to be held during the mid-season break when all teams have played 15 games.

The top-eight knockout competition will be funded to the tune of $5 000.

This will be the first tournament to be confirmed in the Southern Region which has over the years hosted various such tourneys. “Modi has agreed to honour the late VP (John Nkomo) with a tourney in his name and we would be negotiating that it is held annually.

“The teams taking part would be those who occupy the top eight positions on the log when all teams have played 15 games and it is going to be played during the mid-season break in a knockout format,” said the source.

Zifa Southern region chairman Musa Mandaza said he could only comment on the matter once everything has been put in black and white. Efforts to get a comment from Modi were fruitless as he was said to be in South Africa.
