Manica Diamonds 0-1 Simba Bhora
THE rain had stopped by kick-off but Gibbo Stadium was still carrying the weight of it.
Large patches of the pitch were soft underfoot and every pass seemed to hesitate before reaching its target, turning what might have been a lively season opener into a long, stubborn contest where neither side could properly settle into their football.
Manica Diamonds looked comfortable enough with that kind of afternoon. They defended patiently, cleared their lines when they had to and gradually began to believe a point was within reach.
Then, just as the match drifted toward its final moments, the game produced the one clean piece of attacking play it had been missing.
Never Tigere burst down the right flank and lifted a cross into the area where Carlos Mukumbira rose above the defenders and powered a header beyond Geoffrey Chitsumba to hand Simba Bhora a late 1-0 victory in their Castle Lager Premier Soccer League opener yesterday.
For much of the match, the conditions had shaped everything that followed.
The soaked surface slowed attacks, broke the rhythm of passing moves and forced both teams to rely more on direct balls and physical battles than the flowing football they would normally prefer.
Simba Bhora coach Mandla Mpofu admitted the pitch forced his side to adjust. “Getting maximum points away from home is always important and I am happy because it is something we spoke about before the game,” Mpofu said.
“We know at home we are strong, but if you want to compete, you must also collect points away.
“The pitch made it difficult to play the football we wanted, so the boys had to fight and keep pushing. That spirit helped us get the goal in the end.” Before the decisive moment arrived, the match had produced its share of half-chances.
Simba Bhora looked most threatening whenever Tigere accelerated down the right channel, his pace repeatedly stretching the Manica defence and forcing hurried clearances inside the penalty area.
One of his deliveries almost produced the breakthrough when Webster Tafa climbed highest to meet a well-struck free kick, only to watch his header drift narrowly wide.
Manica Diamonds responded with moments of their own.
New signing Pascal Shumbaimwe tested goalkeeper William Thole with a powerful free kick midway through the first half, forcing the reigning Goalkeeper of the Year into a sharp save.
For long stretches afterwards, the match returned to the same familiar struggle.
Midfield battles became scrappy, clearances travelled further than passes and both defences remained alert whenever the ball drifted dangerously into the box.
Manica Diamonds even enjoyed a promising spell midway through the second half when they pushed Simba Bhora deeper inside their own half, but the defending champions held firm and cleared their lines.
With time running out, Mpofu turned to his bench.
Mukumbira was introduced alongside Harrison Masina as Simba Bhora searched for one final surge, and the change proved decisive when Tigere found space again down the right wing.
His cross hung invitingly in the air.
Mukumbira rose above the defence and guided his header beyond Chitsumba to settle the contest in the closing moments.
Manica Diamonds coach Tafadzwa Mashiri was left frustrated at full-time.
“It is painful because we believed we had managed the game well enough to get at least a point,” Mashiri said.
“But in added time, we lost concentration and that is where the goal came from.
“The pitch made it difficult for both teams to build rhythm with the ball, but we cannot complain because both teams played under the same conditions.”
