FOMRER football players who featured for different clubs in Mutare, together with the Sebbo Mapara and Friends Foundation came together last Saturday, at Mutare Showgrounds, to honour Simbarashe ‘Chigova’ Ngosi, who died at the prime of his career in January 2023.
A dark cloud hung the local football fraternity early 2023 following the death of Ngosi, a former Tenax FC goalkeeper, who was on the ranks of army side, Black Rhinos FC.
He died from a chest infection at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital.
The 2019 Eastern Region goalkeeper of the year had joined Black Rhinos FC from Tenax FC, and went for a military training.
He was expected to join the army side for pre-season when he breathed his last.
In the matches played last Saturday, 11 Quartz edged Juventus FC by a solitary goal, before Tenax Legends succumbed 13-14 to Ebenezer FC in a penalty lottery after the two teams had remained deadlocked in regulation time.
In the final encounter, 11 Quartz prevailed over Ebenezer by a solitary goal to win the competition.
Retired prolific Tenax FC goal poacher, Sebbo Mapara, now based in the UK, helped with resources to have the competition staged in memory of his former teammate and friend.
He said the competition will be an annual event.
“I am happy that we managed to pool resources to host this event. To us, this is just a start, and we strongly hope that going forward we will be able to have this event annually. Everyone knows how the late Simbarashe Ngosi was talented, and the pain that we went through when he unexpectedly passed on. We will always remember him, and we can only wish his soul rest in eternal peace,” said Mapara.
