A 400 carton contraband of cooking oil valued at R30 000 was on Saturday afternoon intercepted by Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) and members of the Ferret team at Beitbridge border post.
Sources at the border said Zimra intercepted a Nissan Caravan vehicle which was being used to smuggle the goods into the country from South Africa.
The driver of the vehicle (registration number supplied) fled the scene.
The cartons contained twelve 375ml bottles of cooking oil.
Although Zimra Communication Officer, Mr Taungana Ndoro had not responded to emailed questions, sources said the vehicle and the contraband have since been seized by Zimra.
The smuggling of cooking oil in contravention of statutory instrument number 126 of 2014 (Control of Goods (Open General Import Licence No.2) Amendment notice No 3) which stipulates that permits are required for the importation of products which include cooking oil and milk among others.
Prior to the new development individual travellers were importing these goods in their personal capacity.
