THOUSANDS of Zimbabweans converged at the National Heroes Acre today to pay their last respects to the late nationalist and founding father of Zanu PF, Cde Enos Nkala.
In an emotional speech, President Robert Mugabe chronicled the political journey they embarked on in 1960, pointing out that the hero was abrupt and short tempered but still remained morally upright. He also described Cde Nkala as an ‘unyielding individual who sacrificed his life for others’, and that ‘nationalists sacrificed their lives so that the people of Zimbabwe could re-gain their lost sovereignty’, and challenged foreigners to respect that Zimbabweans have the right to determine their own destiny.
The Nkala family spokesperson described Cde Nkala as a loving family man, who was deeply religious and a role model for both the family and the nation. They also revealed that contrary to previous allegations, Cde Nkala made it clear he wanted to be interred at the National Shrine.
His funeral, which was attended by mourners from all walks of life, had a unifying effect- bringing together top Zanu PF and opposition party officials, notably Professor Arthur Mutambara (MDC-N) and Job Sikhala (MDC99).
