LATEST ON IVORY COAST: US open to taking in Gbagbo: Senior official

“We want to see him leave. If he wishes to come here, we of course would entertain that as a means of resolving the current situation,” a senior State Department official told reporters on the condition of anonymity.

“But any opportunity to do that is an opportunity that is rapidly closing because of what is happening on the ground, and every indication we have at this point is that he’s digging in,” the official said.

The official said Gbagbo has relatives in Atlanta, in the US state of Georgia.

Gbagbo, who retains control of the army, rejected an attempt last week to persuade him to step down and end the crisis, which has sparked international condemnation and fears of a civil war.

Mediators from the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) met Gbagbo on Monday in a new bid to end his standoff with Alassane Ouattara, whom the world community deems the winner of November 28 elections.-AFP
