system in the next three months.
Zesa Holdings has installed 183 000 prepaid meters countrywide since August last year and now wants private players to complement the prepaid ones with smart meters for them to meet their one year target of installing 600 000 meters.
Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company senior project manager Engineer Wilfred Shereni yesterday said the invitation to supply and install was open to everyone, provided they meet the required specifications. Eng Shereni said the cost of the meter installation and labour would be met by the consumer.
“Pre-qualified suppliers and accredited installers will deal directly with customers and ZETDC is only facilitating the process. Because of resource constraints ZETDC is not in a position to fund the project for smart meters, hence the decision to allow customers to fund the smart meter retrofit project. ZETDC will fund the backbone infrastructure.”
He said smart meters had “enhanced functionality” that is not available on prepaid meters.
