Chinhoyi municipality’s chamber secretary and acting town clerk Mr Abel Gotora, who has been asked to prove the authenticity of his qualifications, has left reportedly left for Russia to obtain original copies of his masters degree in law.

Mr Gotora took a month-long leave, with sources said his mission was to obtain the originals from Voronezh State University.

Council asked Mr Gotora to produce original copies of his supposed degree obtained in 1989 acting on a report by Greenfingers Consultancy Pvt which questioned the photocopies he presented when he was employed.

Councillors recently doubted the aunthenticity of the copies in Mr Gotora’s file and concurred that he should provide the originals.

Mr Gotora took 30 days leave on Wednesday last week and conducted a handover-takeover with director of housing Mr Timothy Maregere who will be acting town clerk.

According to sources, Mr Gotora left for Russia on Sunday.

Chinhoyi Mayor Mr Test Michaels said Mr Gotora was expected to travel to Russia to obtain the original copies of his academic qualifications.

“I can confirm that Mr Gotora is on leave,” he said. “He exercised his right to go on leave, but I understand it has something to do with getting original copies of his academic qualifications.”

He said council wanted to verify the authenticity of his qualifications together with four other workers who failed to produce their documents during the job evaluation and skills audit.

Councillors want Mr Gotora to produce the qualifications saying he should have done that when he was first suspended over the same matter in 2008.

In the absence of the original copies, they argue that it would be difficult to verify the authenticity of the photocopied papers in his file.

Mr Gotora claims he lost the original copies.
