League of giants and underdogs

THE Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) have once again proven why it is the most thrilling and unpredictable league in the country, with a thin line separating giants and underdogs.

Zambezi G&C has been the surprise package this season sitting comfortably in second place after matchday seven.

The NRSL has lived up to the reputation this season, with unexpected results, fierce competition, and surprise contenders shaking-up things.

Zambezi G&C are under the guidance of the experienced coach Ralph Kaondera.

Few predicted Zambezi G&C’s strong start considering they were relegation candidates last season and secured their ticket this season through playoffs.

“The secret behind the good start is because we did early preseason preparations, and the playoff games we played helped us a lot, so did my experience in coaching, especially in the NRSL,” said Kaondera.

The team’s resilience was on full display in their latest hard-fought 1-0 victory over police side Black Mambas.

An early goal was all the club needed to secure maximum points.

The win meant that Zambezi G&C have won more games, five, than any other team in the league.

“It was a very tough game, but we scored early in the third minute, and the boys played really well and fought until the final whistle,” he said.

What makes the NRSL special is the surprises.

The league, packed with seasoned coaches and ambitious clubs, ensures competitiveness.

Last season Scottland pulled a shocker and were crowned champions when no one gave them a chance against seasoned campaigners like Harare City, Black Rhinos, Herentals U-20 as well as MWOS.

“It’s always good to compete with seasoned coaches in the league, it’s always tough,” said Kaondera.

With the title race wide open and Zambezi G&C proving that determination and preparation can defy the odds, the NRSL continues to cement their status as Zimbabwe’s most exciting league.

Zambezi G&C are tied with log leaders N’ombeyaora on 15 points, separated by an inferior goal difference.

“We are believing in ourselves and we know we can do this.”
