Learners should take advantage of the opportunity presented by the Zimpapers Junior Media Club, which launched its latest chapter in Mashonaland East last week.
At least 40 learners from four schools were part of the launch and subsequent training workshop that introduced them to the dynamics of print, radio and television journalism.
They showcased their public speaking and singing talents.
Others exhibited what they had produced from welding, gardening, carving, bee-keeping and poultry projects.
Zimpapers Group Editorial Executive Mr William Chikoto was fascinated by various self-help projects being undertaken at Munashe Private High School in Mutoko. He encouraged learners and teachers behind the projects to share information through the Zimpapers Junior Media Club for the benefit of other schools.
“These projects are inspirational stories that we hope you will write about. The teachers will approve the stories, and they will be published. I have not been to a school where I have heard some of the things that the director was talking about,” said Mr Chikoto.
“Others can learn from you, but they can only do so when you write about it. You must produce videos about what you are doing, photographs and news articles, and the whole country will learn. They will get to know that there is a school in Mutoko that does such innovative things.”
The Zimpapers Junior Media Club is a long-term corporate social responsibility initiative that is aimed at making learners media literate regardless of career choices they will make in future.
The programme offers opportunities for exposure through training and producing content for dedicated pages in Zimpapers publications.
Learners also have an opportunity to tour Zimpapers newsrooms and studios.
Veteran media personnel will visit the schools to conduct practical sessions on how to produce content for newspapers, radio and television. Scholarships will be awarded to excelling learners.
The Zimpapers Junior Media Club was first launched in Manicaland in March this year.
It was later introduced in Harare and Bulawayo. The project is running under the theme “Catch them young”.
