ZIMBABWEAN junior swimmer Robyn Lee shattered four African Junior Championships records and bagged eight medals, from eight events, during last week’s tournament in Egypt.
The16-year-old swimmer, who is based in Australia on an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship, showed her class as she won five gold, two silver and a bronze medal.
She was awarded the Victrix Ludoram (winner of the games) award for breaking the records in the 50m, 100m and 200 backstroke as well as the 50m butterfly events.
Lee, who flew back to her base direct from Cairo, also shattered five local junior records in the 50m, 100m,200m butterfly as well as the 50m and 200m backstroke. Team Zimbabwe coach Sheelah Cruse hailed the ‘amazing’ Lee as well as the other members of the team – Liam Ohara, Liam Davis and Nomvula Mjimba – for giving their all at the continental showpiece. For Mjimba, who was a doubt for the championships because of an injury, it was all about learning.
Davis said: “I was really proud of myself for what I did and hopefully I can do better in the coming months.”
Ohara was upset by missing out on a medal. “I was upset that I didn’t manage to get medals because I was swimming in the age group up, but I improved my time and was happy with that,’’ he said.
