South Africa’s entertainment industry is mourning the loss of legendary actor and theatre icon Seputla Sebogodi, widely known for his iconic role as Kenneth Mashaba on Generations. His illustrious career spanned more than five decades and left an enduring mark on the country’s cultural landscape.
Sebogodi died on the evening of July 15, 2026, following complications related to diabetes, his family confirmed in a statement released on Thursday.
“The immediate family of Seputla Sebogodi confirms, with profound sadness, his passing on the evening of 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes,” the statement read.
The family has requested privacy as they come to terms with the loss of a man widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most accomplished performers.
Over a career that bridged theatre, television and film, Sebogodi earned admiration for his versatility, commanding stage presence and unwavering dedication to the performing arts. He became a familiar face to audiences through memorable roles in popular productions including Generations, Suburban Bliss, Bophelo ke Semphego, Redemption and, most recently, Scandal!.
Beyond television, Sebogodi was revered as a theatre giant whose contributions helped shape South Africa’s dramatic arts sector. His stage credits included acclaimed productions such as Big Dada, Waiting for Godot, The Rivonia Trial,
Once a Pirate and Mooi Street Moves, performances that cemented his reputation as one of the country’s finest actors.
Paying tribute to his life and career, the family described his impact on the arts as immeasurable.
“Seputla Sebogodi leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in South African theatre and television. His legacy will live on through his remarkable body of work and the many lives he touched,” they said.
His death comes just days after he publicly dismissed social media claims suggesting he had fallen on hard times. The veteran actor clarified that a photograph circulating online had been taken on a film set and criticised the false narratives surrounding his wellbeing.
The Sebogodi family said details regarding memorial and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
