LATE music icon, Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, and superstar Alick Macheso have left footprints on the local showbiz landscape.
Tuku went on to conquer the world while Macheso is a household name in the sub-region.
The two legendary singers are vying for the inaugural Mashonaland Central Achievers Awards (MCAA) to be held this Saturday at Kangara Resort (Acadia Dam) in Bindura.
A brainchild of Umtali Saidi, the awards ceremony seeks to honour both the living and departed legends who put the province, and Zimbabwe, on the world map.
Nominees will be vying for awards in various categories such as arts and entertainment, mining, rural and urban community development, voluntary community development, education and tourism.
US-based Chimurenga guru Thomas “Mukanya” Mapfumo, Tuku, Macheso and the late Mbuya Madhuve hail from the province.
It is also home to world renowned sculptors who passed through the iconic Tengenenge Cultural Village in Guruve.
“The Mash Central Achievers Awards is a celebration of talent success and legacy for the province,” said Saidi.
“The awards ceremony seeks to recognise the efforts and contribution of individuals and organisations to economic and social progress of the province.
“Some of the nominees to look forward to are in the Life Time Achievement Awards category where we have Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso in Arts and Entertainment,” he said.
Saidi said evolving Zim dancehall star, Sylvester “Freeman” Chizanga, will be also vying for top honours at the awards ceremony.
“It’s a way of celebrating the success of the people in the province, it’s also a platform for players in related fields and different businesses to meet and create networks beneficial for development.”

Meanwhile, songbird Ammi Jamanda and David Hondoyedzomba, who hails from Mashonaland Central province will provide entertainment at the event. To ensure the event meets international standards, there will be a red carpet event.
Prior to the main event, a number of activities – ranging from quad biking, boat cruise and horse riding, will take place at the event.
The awards ceremony will then start at 7pm running till 10pm. Afterwards, guests will be treated to music by Jamanda and Hondoyedzomba, who is backed by Black Site.
Saidi also runs the Bindura Arts Festival (BAF).
