BRIAN MAPHOSA, the President of the Zimbabwe Junior Golf Association, believes the country picked vitals lessons at the Toyota World Junior Golf championships and will be back stronger next year.
Zimbabwe, who sent a boys team to compete at the tournament for the first time after a nine-year absence, plan to send a girls team in the future.
“The tournament demonstrated that the country has the raw talent and we need to work on issues like preparations if we are to make it,” said Maphosa.
“We believe we should have a strong team for next year that includes the likes of Margaret Nyamukondiwa and Danielle Bekker who will have come of age then, as they are playing excellently at tender ages.
“Resources remain a challenge as the team could not have adequate preparations for this level of competition.
“This was also the first time, after a nine-year absence from the competition and this was bound to have a negative impact on the team as well.
“We are obviously going back to the drawing board and preparations for next year’s tournament have to start now.”
The Zimbabwe junior golf team, which finished last at the tournament, have returned home from Japan.
The individual scores were; Stuart Krog 71, 72, 76, and 67; Justin Kersten 80, 81, 73 and 71; Kieren Vincent 76, 77, 79 and 76; Mbongeni Maphosa 77, 72 and 75 for his first three rounds after he withdrew from the last round because of nose bleeding.
