Happy holidays viewing. What a long weekend!
Phew!!!
Nice time catching up with family members, let alone remembering our fallen heroes.
I like it this time with ZBC TV as they take us down memory lane when they air our history programmes especially how we got our freedom.
This is also the time when we get to hear more stories about the liberators and this is in good time during school holiday with children glued to the television. What an opportunity for them to reflect on their history notes.
From the musical feel, one could understand the concept of heroes holiday although this won’t be for long.
We grew up listening to musicians like Chinx Chingaira. When it was time for Heroes’ Day, we could sing along but now there is young blood from dancehall to hip-hop who are patriotic to the extent that many are falling in love with our history.
In short, we say, viewers are spoilt for choice and keep it up Zimbabweans for being patriotic.
So far ZBCTV you have done us proud.
The Heroesplush history moments on television are not only educative but entertaining. I have heard also some groups doing theatre have recorded some of the episodes on liberation war scenes so as to act athem out with some musicians doing revamped videos using the file copies as their background.
Well, it’s interesting.
Still on those programmes, suprisingly there are no repeats of such products, meaning to say, the history content is there.
Can we continue seeing more even after the special holiday.
DSTV is also in the history spirit mood as courtesy of BET (DStv Premium, channel 129) is boosting its historical drama slate this August with the premiere of critically-acclaimed mini-series “The Book of Negroes”.
Directed by Clement Virgo, and starring Oscar winners Cuba Gooding Jnr and Louis Gosset Jnr, “The Book of Negroes” is a powerful re-telling of Lawrence Hill’s 2007 award-winning novel of the same name. The six-part mini-series centres around the life of 19th century slave, Aminata Diallo (Aunjanue Ellis), who bravely navigates the perils of the slave trade in an attempt to secure her freedom.
Eleven-year-old Aminata is abducted from her village in West Africa, placed in shackles and sent across the ocean to be sold into slavery on a South Carolina plantation. She falls in love and marries a fellow West African slave named Chekura but when their baby is brutally abducted and sold by a jealous slave master, Aminata becomes determined to return to her homeland.
The onset of the Revolutionary War helps Aminata flee her new owner in New York. Using her ability to read and write, Aminata successfully petitions British abolitionists, who organise passage to Africa for 1 200 former slaves -a final voyage that will reunite her with her homeland and allow her to voice her life story.
