UPCOMING Dendera musician Nixon Leonard has urged fellow artists to be original and creative when composing their music if they want to succeed and achieve international success.
Leonard, 30, who has just released his debut single called ‘Murandakadzi,’ which will be on his upcoming debut album, said the reason why Zimbabwe has few artists who are recognised internationally is that most of them are not original and are lacking in terms of creativity.
He said the reason why artists like Alick Macheso, the late System Tazvida, the late Simon Chimbetu and others were popular is that they were original and you could easily identify their music from the first beat.
“I believe if we as Zimbabwean artists want to grow and be known globally we have to be original and creative in our productions.
“We have potential to reach very far in this industry if we are original with our productions.
“Look at legends like Alick Macheso, the late System Tazvida, the late Simon Chimbetu, you could easily identify their music from the first beat because they were original and creative.
“That is what we should all do so that we reach their standards or even surpass them,” he said.
Leonard is currently in the studio working on his debut eight-track album, which is due to be released in a few months.
